ABOUT: Stacey Rose’s work celebrates and explores Blackness, Black identity, Black history, body politics, and the dilemma of life as the “other.” “I believe that art and activism go hand in hand. Art, in all its forms, has the power to reflect, enhance, and transform the human condition. Art should be accessible to all and should first serve the community from which it emerges.” One of her plays, The Danger: A Homage to Strange, grapples with the themes of white supremacy and the patriarchal structures' effects on identity and destiny. Many of her other plays have underlying themes with similar ideas of blackness and identity in relation to our society and whiteness.

Rose received a BA in Theatre from UNC Charlotte and an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where her thesis advisor was Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker (The Flick). Rose was named a Dramatists Guild Fellow for 2015-16 and received a 2017-18 Many Voices Fellowship from The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis, MN, a 2018-19 Goodman Theatre’s Playwrights Unit fellowship, a 2019- 20 McKnight Fellowship, and a 2020-22 Playwrights’ Center Core Writer fellowship. Most recently, she was awarded a 2020 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Initiative commission from the Manhattan Theatre Club.

Recently returning to Charlotte, Rose has received a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts & Science Council to establish the Queen City New Play Initiative with Martin Damien Wilkins.
