ABOUT: The QC Family Tree is a faith-based non-profit community in the west Charlotte neighborhood of Enderly Park that seeks to “inspire, enrich, and embody community” in their ministry and common life. Their goal is to empower residents and combat the effects of systemic racism and gentrification. QC Family Tree was founded by Greg and Helms Jarrell, both ordained ministers. Helms Jarrell cultivates community through preaching, visual art, innovation, neighborhood engagement, and place-making techniques. She recently was a resident artist at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation. She serves on the Executive Committee of Alternate Roots, a group of artists and cultural organizers based in the South creating a better world together. Greg Jarrell is a jazz saxophonist and the author of the book, A Riff of Love.
QC Family tree was involved in a storytelling project with artist Hannah Hasan. Hasan interviewed neighbors, wrote their stories, and produced live storytelling events that honored the experiences of people and build cultural capital from within. Hasan believes that telling people’s stories can incite a change, labeling her work as ‘social impact story sharing.’
