ABOUT: Lorien Academy for the Arts is a small non-profit that provides access to art education and experiences for youth living in low-income households, primarily in the neighborhoods of west Charlotte. The program is based on a six-year curriculum, which builds skills over time. During the summer, students attend an 8-week Art Academy. During school year, Lorien Academy partners with other art organizations to provide monthly art experiences for its students.

PROGRAMS

ArtEd (Art Education): Every summer, Lórien Academy hosts an 8-week summer art academy based on a college model of learning. First-year students enroll in foundational courses. As they return in future summers, the curriculum advances and expands to continue to challenge and grow them as artists through all of high school.

ArtX (Art Experiences): While learning to create art is important, it is equally impactful to experience art as well. Throughout the school year, Lórien students attend monthly art experiences. Through partnerships with high-level arts organizations in the community, these experiences come in all shapes and sizes.

The purpose of these experiences is not just something fun to do. It is an integral component to the students’ artistic development to understand the broader conversation they are a part of, and develop their own voice in that conversation.
